A Study on the Correlation between Aerobic Exercise and Climacteric Symptoms of Middle-Aged Women

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between aerobic exercise and climacteric symptoms of middle-aged women.
The subjects for this study were 166 middle-aged women between 40 and 60 years of age who were members of aerobic gymnasiums in Kunsan city and Jeonju city.
Data were collected from January 4 to January 31, 1994 by means of a questionnaire.
The instruments for this study were 20 items out of 25 items of climacteric symptoms measurement scale developed by Neugarten.
The analysis of data was done by frequency, percentage, T-test, ANOVA, and Pearson Correlation Coefficient.
The findings of this study were as follows.
1. The mean level of score 0 to 5 on climacteric symptoms was 1.2456.
2. There were nonsignificant differences between general characteristic variables and the level of climacteric symptoms.
3. The relations between aerobic exercise and climacteric symptoms showed negative correlations significantly. Therefore it was identified that the exercise is one of the important factors which influence favorably upon lessening the climacteric symptoms (the period of exercise: r= -0.3214, p= 0.0001; the frequency of exercise per week: r= -0.1676, p= 0.0309).
